Farali Little Millet Upma with Bottle Gourd is a healthy millet-based version of the classic South Indian upma, prepared using little millet and nutritious ingredients. Light, satisfying, and rich in natural fiber, this dish delivers authentic flavor while supporting a balanced lifestyle. Ingredients

  1. 1 cup little millet (samai), washed and soaked for 20 minutes
  2. 1 tsp ghee
  3. 2 tbsp rosted peanuts
  4. 3/4 cup bottle gourd (lauki/dudhi), finely chopped
  5. 1 tsp cashew nuts
  6. 1 tsp sugar
  7. Fresh coconut, as per taste
  8. 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  9. 2 curry leaves
  10. 1 inch ginger, grated
  11. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  12. 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  13. 1 tsp rock salt (sendha namak) or to taste
  14. 1 tsp lemon juice
  15. 2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  16. Water, as required (about 1½–2 cups)

Instructions

Step 1

Drain the soaked little millet and keep aside.

Step 2

Heat ghee in a deep pan or pressure cooker.

Step 3

Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.

Step 4

Add peanuts and cashews saute till lightly golden.

Add ginger, green chilli and curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds.

Add chopped bottle gourd and cook for 2–3 minutes till slightly soft.

Add drained little millet and mix gently.

Add sendha namak, sugar and black pepper. Mix well.

Add required water, cover and cook on low flame until millet is soft and water is absorbed.

Step 10

Switch off the flame. Add lemon juice, fresh coconut and coriander leaves.Mix gently and rest for 2 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions :-
•Serve hot as a Farali breakfast or lunch
• Enjoy with plain curd (if allowed during fasting)
• Can be served with roasted peanuts on the side
