Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup kodo millet
  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 1 BIG GREEN bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup small onions
  • 2 cups tomato slices
  • 1 inch ginger, peeled and crushed
  • 6 Garlic clove, crushed
  • 4 Green chilies, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek powder
  • 1/4 tsp asafetida
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala powder
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • as needed Salt
  • 1/4 cup sesame seed oil
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 cup curry leaves
  • 4 chili peppers
  • 1/4 (1/4 cup) melted butter
  • 1/4 cup coriander, finely chopped

Instructions

Step 1

Use The Fresh Start Wellness Cafe's Kodo Millet Rice (Kodra/Varagu) for this recipe.
Gather the necessary ingredients and place them near the cooking area.

Step 2

Soak kodo millet in a bowl with 4c water, qbout 30 mins. Drain, rinse 4 to 5 times with plenty of water.
Use a rice cooker for making the sambar saatham. TURN ON THE COOKER. Add 2tbsp oil. Stir in mustard. Let it splutter then add the rest of spice. Add onion and bell pepper, sauté for 3-4 minutes.

Step 3

Add kodo millet, toor dal, ginger, garlic and turmeric powder.. Add 3c water, stir in tamarind paste add tomato, 1/4c coconut milk. mix every thing together. close with the lid.

Step 4

Keep stiring a few times lifting the lid. When it bolis add masala powder. Mix. When toor dal and millet are cooked completely salt to taste. Mix and turn off the cooker. You may add 2tbssp ghee and mix. Garnish with cilantro.

Transfer to a serving bowl.serve hot. Serve with papad or chips. It is a nourishing whole meal. Enjoy.
