DIABETIC CARE SERIES
Research-identified combinations of activated and unpolished raw millets, supported by structured consumption guidance and practical recipes.
The Diabetic Care Series is inspired by the experience and encouraging outcomes of the DiaCare Project, India’s first millet-based nutrition project created specifically for Type 1 diabetic warrior children.
Developed through research, professional consultation and practical community experience, these carefully selected millet combinations are now being introduced to the wider diabetic community.
The DiaCare story
From DiaCare to the Diabetic Care Series
A Nutrition Initiative Born from a Real Need
Children living with Type 1 diabetes face challenges that go far beyond taking multiple insulin. Every meal must be carefully planned, blood-glucose levels must be monitored regularly, and the quantity and timing of carbohydrates must be considered.
For children from financially challenged families, access to suitable, nutritious and affordable food can be especially difficult.
Recognising this need, the Indian Institute of millets research ( IIMR) winner combos, The Fresh Start Wellness Café and Y2ktots foundation with its strong research backed approach and product-development support, introduced the DiaCare Project, India’s first millet-based nutrition initiative designed specifically for children living with Type 1 diabetes.
The project was launched in January 2025 by Ms. Anu Kumari IAS, District Collector of Thiruvananthapuram, with CSR support from Manappuram Foundation.
Carefully researched. Thoughtfully developed.
The objective was to identify practical millet combinations that could become part of a balanced and sustainable diabetic diet.
Before implementation, the team undertook months of:
- Millet and ingredient research
- Consultation with doctors, paediatricians, endocrinologists and dietitians
- Product formulation
- Taste and preparation trials
- Portion-planning exercises
- Community-level observation
- Regular interaction with children and their parents
Encouraging Experiences That Inspired the Next Step
The selected millet combinations with various variants were introduced to participating children through monthly DiaCare Nutrition Kits, supported by consumption instructions, preparation guidance and regular monitoring.
During the programme, participating families reported encouraging changes among some children, including:
- Better consistency in blood-glucose management
- Improvement in HbA1c levels
- Healthy weight gain among underweight children
- Increased energy and activity levels
- Improved concentration and confidence
- Better meal satisfaction and dietary variety
- Fewer unexpected glucose fluctuations
- Changes in insulin requirements under medical supervision
These observations encouraged us to ask an important question:
Why should structured, carefully developed millet nutrition remain limited to one social-impact project?
This question led to the development of the DiaCare Diabetic Care Series, making our research-identified millet combinations, preparation guidance and practical dietary support available to the wider diabetic community.
Individual results can vary. These observations are based on programme experiences and should not be interpreted as guaranteed clinical outcomes.
Introducing the Diabetic Care Series: the millet nutrition approach
Better Nutrition. Better Guidance. Better Everyday Support.
The DiaCare Diabetic Care Series brings together carefully selected combinations of activated and unpolished millets as part of a structured approach to everyday diabetic nutrition.
Every combo is accompanied by detailed guidance to help customers understand:
- Which millet to consume
- How much to consume
- How often it may be consumed
- The suitable time for consumption
- How it should be soaked and prepared
- Which foods it can be paired with
- The recommended period for using the combo
- How to practise portion control
- How to prepare different millet recipes
These combinations are intended to make millet nutrition more practical, understandable and sustainable for individuals and families managing diabetes.
What Makes the Diabetic Care Series Different?
Research-Identified Millet Combinations
The millets in every combo have been selected based on the nutritional research and practical experience developed through the DiaCare programme.
Activated Millets
Our activation process involves soaking, drying and carefully roasting the millets. This traditional process is used to improve their usability, taste and cooking experience.
Unpolished and Naturally Nutritious
The millets are retained in their unpolished form to preserve more of their naturally occurring fibre and nutrients.
Structured Consumption Guidance
Customers do not receive only a box of raw millets. Every combo includes a detailed, dietitian-guided consumption plan explaining how the products can be incorporated into everyday meals.
Practical Recipes
Each combo provides access to easy recipes, helping families prepare familiar meals such as millet rice, porridge, upma, dosa, idli, khichdi and other suitable dishes.
Portion and Meal-Timing Support
The accompanying guide explains suggested quantities, frequency and meal timings. Individual requirements may differ and should be confirmed with the treating doctor or dietitian.
Built on Community Experience
The series has evolved from practical engagement with children living with Type 1 diabetes, their parents, medical professionals and nutrition experts.
